bACKGROUND

CORPORATE CONSULTANT - TO MEDIA PRODUCTION, ENTERTAINMENT & ADVENTURE TRAVEL.

Leading a technology team in the internationally renowned 'The Open University', took me around the world giving conference speeches & technology workshops. Using new media innovatively to support education was my focus.

A move to the commercial sector was natural and lucrative, again working with international leaders in the technology industry - Cable and Wireless and Accenture. This international corporate world was fascinating, rewarding and offered frequent world travel and continued to feed the love and 'need' to travel and experience different cultures - and challenging environments. Ultimately tying these 'needs' in with a life long love of motorcycling was pure genius!

Starting my own motorcycle adventure business 'Jeffbike' focussed my initial adventure travel on North America.

As a 'self employed' independent I've managed to direct my career clearly in the Adventure, Entertainment and Building of Telecommunication towers also a Gold Merchant. Working on both ends , research, marketing and promotion, as well as guiding motorcyclists across various challenging world adventures. My work with uilding of Telecommunication towers Group also offers amazing opportunities to use my extensive travel experience in hostile environments - and visit incredible film and news locations.

Experience

 SKI THE ALPS IN SWITZERLAND

Admittedly there are lots of amazing places to Ski on planet earth, but the Swiss Alps are highly regarded for a reason – some of the best slopes in the world. With some of the toughest black diamonds in the world, not to mention some of the best powder out there, a good time is waiting. Do not go to Switzerland without your sticks (or board for that matter).

CLIFF DIVING IN ALGRAVE, PORTUGAL

While the adrenaline rush may be the same as skydiving or bungee jumping, cliff diving has a major difference – you’re not strapped into anything. Take a leap from way too high up into some way too clear water. Your first breath coming up will be a moment you’ll never forget.

Strategy

Whilst working for an adventure tour operator and later a retail travel company, I recall many discussions about how to make ourselves stand out from the crowd. In both organisations, we knew we had something special: expertise and knowledge in one case and buying power and great service in the other. But these messages always got lost in the rush to get product in front of customers – and seemed somehow less important, as senior management required a measurable result from marketing activity. I know there are many companies out there with similar issues – but the lack of effective communication around a company’s true USP’s will hinder success and make many organisations look very similar to most of their competitors.

success

Starting and running any tour, lodging or adventure travel business successfully can be challenging… But in spite of this fact, To succeed in adventure travel business today, you need to be flexible and have good planning and organizational skills. Many people start a business thinking that they'll turn on their computers or open their doors and start making money, only to find that making money in a business is much more difficult than they thought. You can avoid this in your business ventures by taking your time and planning out all the necessary steps you need to achieve success.

I HAVE EXPERIENCE & PROVEN

ADVENTURE TRAVELLER

Adventure travel is all about passion.

For nature, for people and for culture and the emotions that bubble up as a result. And of course, for someone like me who believes in travel as a key to wellness – adventure travel is one more way to during any trip into a mind-body-soul journey.

WHAT ADVENTURE TRAVEL MEANS TO ME

What is adventure travel?

Like many things in life, the definition of what qualifies as adventure travel is completely dependent on who you talk to.

Wikipedia would tell you that “adventure travel is a type of tourism, involving exploration or travel with perceived (and possibly actual) risk, and potentially requiring specialized skills and physical exertion.”

But apart from Wikipedia not being the ultimate source –this definition feels limiting.

I personally prefer the definition developed by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) which broadens the scope to demonstrate the interconnectedness that comes from adventure travel. According to ATTA, adventure travel can be defined as “Any domestic or international trip that includes at least two of the following three aspects: physical activity, natural environment and cultural immersion.”

Even the range of experiences that fall under “adventure travel” are more varied than you might think, with 34 activities that are formally considered to make up adventure tourism including archaeological expedition, backpacking, camping, climbing, ecotourism, environmentally sustainable activities, getting to know the locals, hiking, kayaking, rafting, scuba diving, surfing, trekking, safaris, walking tours and volunteer tourism (just to name a few).

3 LESSONS LEARNED ABOUT ADVENTURE TRAVEL

I’ve said before…I never really considered myself an adventure traveler – even if by all accounts, hiking, kayaking and skiing featured prominently in my travel itineraries. I think I had my own perceptions about needing to be “hard core” to consider myself an adventurer. Of course now I know better.

While understanding the definitions and the type of adventure traveler can help you sift through the ever growing list of destinations and activities to consider when planning your next trip – there is an essence to adventure tourism that transcends any definition you might find.  Surrounded by individuals that live, breathe, eat and sleep adventure during my time at the Adventure Travel World Summit in Chile, I learned about the heart of adventure travel and helped me develop my own understanding.

Adventure travel is about empowerment.

This probably won’t surprise anyone. But whether you are trying a new activity or packing your favorite gear, there is nothing quite like setting out to push yourself towards something that at times feels just out of reach. The type of adventure almost doesn’t even matter. The simple fact of seeing yourself in a new way as a result of an adventure – a perspective that could never been seen from the comforts of your home or office – makes you stand taller. You’d think I would have felt this sense of pride after major hikes or even after braving the front seat of a whitewater raft down the Snake River. But really, it was my first time paragliding – even though the activity involves little perceived effort – the simple act of allowing myself to soak up the air around me as we floated through the sky held up only by a parachute. By the time my feet eventually made contact with the ground below, I felt as if I was standing with more oomph in my step.

Adventure travel promotes real experiences through immersion.

Trust me. You get to know people in very intimate ways on a new adventure. The conversations and interactions that take place with locals – from guides to the others in your group – are often what help make long lasting memories. Being totally focused in the moment takes away the superfluous layers that sometimes get in the way of connecting with others. Laughing when you fall (and hopefully get back up). Depending on your guide and following the bright colors of his jacket in zero visibility. Helping each other put on (and take off) crampons and safety harnesses. These are the things that form the glue that bond group members together. You might as well be family by the time you are done.

Adventure travel teaches us to choose must.

It is hard to miss the feeling that surrounds adventurer travelers. These are individuals who exude passion – for life, for people and for their environment. During the Adventure Travel World Summit, I was introduced to the work of “must versus should” by Elle Luna. This simple notion, of choosing “must” – and listening to our calling from within the depths of our soul – because that is where passion lives, is the common thread that binds adventurers. I spoke to countless people (or “Tribe members” as they like to call themselves) during the Adventure Travel World Summit, who believe with every ounce of their being in the power that comes from changing the way we travel to focus on local, authentic experiences that can only be found when you call yourself an adventurer. Unlike other types of travel, adventure tourism reminds us each day to choose must – to choose ourselves – to choose to live in the here and now.

Adventure travel reminds us of the most important life lessons.

Bracing myself against 60 mph winds on the low lying ridges of the Osorno Volcano, I was reminded of the absolute lack of predictability of life. Despite months of anticipation and bundle of affirmation that I’d tied up in the idea of reaching the summit – nature had a different plan for me that day. And though my story is one of woman versus nature, I listened in awe to adventurer Omar Samra – the first Egyptian to climb Mount Everest – whose expeditions helped him learn about letting go after losing his wife tragically, the lesson is the same. Because adventure travel teaches us (if we did not already know) to strive for goals while respecting the forces that surround us. Because it is only when we, as Samra says, “… let things go, they turn into light and go everywhere.”

3 TYPES OF ADVENTURE TRAVELERS

Even the type of traveler can be differentiated when looking at adventure travel between “Adventure enthusiasts,” “Adventurers,” and “Adventure Grazers” according to the 2015 Adventure Tourism Development Index.

Adventure Grazers  tend to be bucket list driven and seek unique, once in a lifetime experiences in new places with family.

Adventurers are more likely to be moderate thrill seekers that want to improve their skills, looking for opportunities to try their favorite or related activities in new places. (I’d probably put myself in this category.)

Adventure Enthusiasts seek out new locales to practice one favorite activity at high levels and with higher risks.
